Officer-involved shooting leaves 1 dead

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Washington County.

"The cops didn't give him a chance, they just started shooting," said Betty Gray, the man's mother. "They could have Tasered him and handcuffed him and put him in the hospital but they didn't; they shot and killed my son."

Officers say they were forced to shoot when Gallo refused to drop the knife.

Gallo's mother was outside the trailer as her son was shot and killed.

Gray told Channel 11 all she wanted to do was get Gallo help after he had been acting strangely all day.

It wasn't until he went door-to-door with a knife harassing neighbors and eventually breaking into another trailer that she called 911.

Gray says she called for an ambulance to take her son to the hospital.

Instead, two troopers showed up with guns drawn.

"He aggressively came at them and would not respond to the commands," Washington County Coroner Dr. Tim Warco said.

"They said two times, 'hands up, hands up.' That's all," Gray said.

Gray says her son hasn't been acting right since he was involved in a head-on collision in May,

They had been talking about getting him help just hours before he was killed.

"He was suicidal, not homicidal," Gallo's cousin, Robert Herring said. "Just the other day he was saying he just wanted to spend more time with his kid. It doesn't matter now."

There will be a news conference Monday morning.
