Bob Swartzwelder, president of Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge No. 1 called the decision a “huge win for the working men and women of the Pittsburgh Police Department, primarily the rank and file and what it means for them is it gives them the right to live where they want or choose to live where they want whether within the city or 25 air miles.”

Under the ruling, officers can live within 25 air miles of the City-County Building.

Mayor William Peduto issued the following statement in response to the court’s decision:

"The people of Pittsburgh expressed overwhelming support for the residency requirement and we want our police officers to continue to live in the neighborhoods and communities that they serve. We defended the will of the residents of Pittsburgh, all the way to the Supreme Court, believing that the law that allowed Pittsburgh to become a Home Rule Charter city should have taken precedence."
