Pair leap from vehicle during police chase; 1 arrested

A theft in Washington County ended in a crash in Pittsburgh’s North Side and one person in custody.

Brandon Wheeler, 22, of Pittsburgh was arrested in connection with the theft of two TVs from the South Strabane Wal-Mart after 4 a.m., police said.

Police responding to the theft report broadcasted a description of the vehicle, a Uhaul van, and state police found it traveling north on Interstate 79, police said. When they tried to pull it over, the van fled, continuing north until it veered onto Interstate 376 eastbound.

The van exited onto Greentree Road and eventually drove into the North Side, police said. On Stayton Street, police saw a 17-year-old female leap from the passenger door while the van was still moving, and then Wheeler exit the driver’s door.

Wheeler fled on foot but was eventually caught by police, police said. The teen hurt her head.

The van rolled another 100 yards or so, hitting a parked vehicle and fences before hitting a tree and stopping.
