Parents concerned about bus stop safety, urge city for crossing guard

Parents in one Pittsburgh neighborhood are worried about the safety of their kids at the bus stop.

This intersection at Leyt, Lowrie and Frohman streets is very busy all times of the day in Troy Hill.

Parents contacted Channel 11 because their kids are standing at their bus stops without a crossing guard.

Channel 11 spotted three cars barely stopping or not stopping at all at the intersection when kids were waiting nearby for their school buses.

“The guy came, and he clipped the child’s bookbag. Good thing the child wasn’t hit, but he ran over his bookbag,” parent Tiffany Cochenour said.

“Over there, the little boy was crossing the road and then the car was coming by and it came to an immediate stop and it almost hit him,” student Alissa Giado said.

Channel 11 reached out to Councilwoman Darlene Harris. She said she would love to have a crossing guard there and her office has been working to get one, but she says there is a shortage of them.

“Parents are down here but there are some kids who don’t have parents (present), so I think it would help especially because there are a lot of little kids,” Melissa Casson said.

Pittsburgh Public Schools said the city pays and assigns the crossing guards.

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said parents who would like a crossing guard at that intersection need to call or write a letter to police headquarters so that their concerns are on record.
