The bus collided with an SUV shortly before 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Dallas Avenue and Bennett Street.

Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph said initial reports indicate the driver of the SUV ran a red light and crashed into the bus.

The bus driver was extricated from the wreckage with the Jaws of Life, police said. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

Four bus passengers and the driver of the SUV were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

Port Authority officials said all PAT buses have cameras, and footage of the crash is being reviewed by police.

Bricks, debris and some car parts were left scattered near a sidewalk after the crash. A front yard and a retaining wall were damaged.

“If it would’ve went any faster, or whatever, it would’ve went straight through there and probably into those houses,” Chris Tutt, of Homewood, said.
