PennDOT resurfaces Liberty Tunnel interchange

PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation began resurfacing operations at the Liberty Tunnel Interchange – Routes 51 and 19 – in Pittsburgh Saturday morning.

Resurfacing activities will continue at the south portal of the Liberty Tunnel at the Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) and Route 19 (West Liberty Avenue) interchange, PennDOT said in a release.

The following restrictions will continue through 7 p.m. Saturday:

  • Single-lane restriction in the outbound Liberty Tunnel.
  • Single-lane restriction on the ramp from Route 19 to northbound Route 51.
  • Single-lane restriction on Route 19 between the Liberty Tunnel and Pioneer Avenue.
  • Work on the closed ramp from northbound Route 19 to southbound Route 51.

According to PennDOT, lane restrictions on Route 19 will shift throughout the day to accommodate the resurfacing operation.

The overall project will conclude in the middle of July.
