Pennsylvania now averaging more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day; 1st time since May

PITTSBURGH — According the latest update from the Pennsylvania Department of Health on Tuesday, the state is now averaging more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day for the first time since late May.

The latest numbers showed 1,442 new cases, for a daily average of 1,043. This marks the first time the state has reached this threshold since May 28.

According to our partners at TribLive.com, the daily average had dropped to just 173 cases less than a month ago. Since then, average daily cases have skyrocketed more than 500% as the delta variant continues to spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to report that the various COVID-19 vaccines available to people are still the best chance to avoid falling seriously ill. The CDC reports the Pfizer vaccine is 96% effective, the Moderna vaccine is 95% effective and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is nearly 70% effective against the delta variant.
