PITTSBURGH — UPDATE: The Diocese of Pittsburgh has reported that the surgery for Bishop David Zubik's back was successful, according to his doctors.
Bishop Zubik is resting comfortably at the hospital and hopes to return home soon. He is grateful for the continued prayers for strength and healing during his recovery.

The diocese says the surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Monday at UPMC Mercy Hospital.
The diocese plans to issue an update once the surgery is complete, and is asking for prayers for the bishop's surgery and healing.
The bishop leads about 630,000 Catholics in 192 parishes in and around Pittsburgh in a six-county area of southwestern Pennsylvania.
