Police find man, woman passed out in station parking lot with children in car

A man was arrested early Wednesday after police said he and a woman passed out in the parking lot of a Pittsburgh police station with two children in the back seat of their SUV.

Officers at the Zone 1 police station on the North Side noticed that the SUV was taking up two spaces with its engine still running.

When they went to check on the vehicle at about 2:30 a.m., police said the driver and a woman in the passenger seat were passed out. Police said a 2-year-old child and a 5-year-old child were in the back seat, and only one of them was in a car seat.

Investigators said officers woke up the driver, whom they identified as 36-year-old Joseph Trojan Jr. of Reserve Township.

Police said Trojan drove to the police station because the woman in the car had passed out after taking took too many pills and he didn't know what else to do. Police said when he parked the car, he also passed out with the vehicle in gear, allowing it to begin rolling backward. Officers ordered him out of the SUV and woke the woman.

Brass knuckles, a glass pipe and other drug paraphernalia were visible in the car, police said. Officers also said Trojan appeared to be under the influence, and took him into custody after conducting a field sobriety test.

When officers transported Trojan to the Special Deployment Division at Zone 6, police said a bag of marijuana fell onto the floor as they removed him from the patrol car.

An ambulance took the woman to Allegheny General Hospital, where police said she was in good condition.

Both children were asleep and were not hurt. They were put in the care of their grandparents.

Trojan was charged with DUI, possession, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children among other charges.

He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
