Police search for driver who fled crash; family makes emotional plea

DUNBAR, Pa. — Police need your help in finding the driver who hit a man walking on a Fayette County road then left the scene.

Devin Derkach, 21, was hit by a car as he left the Fayette County Fair.  Investigators said the driver initially stopped to check on him but then took off before the ambulance arrived.

Devin left the Fayette County Fair last week and walked towards a gas station on Route 119 in Dunbar to be picked up by his friend.  His family said he was waving his friend when the car hit him.  Devin said the driver initially stopped to check on him but then took off before the ambulance arrived.

"He's in shock he still can't believe he was hit.  He just keeps saying over and over 'I can't believe I was hit,'" said Melissa Derkach, Devin's aunt.

"He actually hit my nephew, left, did a u-turn, came back around, stopped and asked if he is okay, " Melissa said.  "He said, 'It's time for me to go" and left the scene, left my nephew on the side of the road for dead."
Devin was flown by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital.  Doctors did everything they could to save his leg, but they had to amputate his foot and leg.

Just minutes before being wheeled into surgery, Devin made his own plea to the driver who hit him.

"Whoever hit me, please come forward.  If you had a heart, you would," Devin said.

Pennsylvania state police are searching for a burgundy KIA Sorento with LED headlights and front end damage.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to please contact State Police, Uniontown barracks.
