Police: Woman answers knock at door, drives man who tried to rob her to ATM

State police in Indiana County were searching Tuesday for a man who knocked on a woman’s door, forced his way inside and attempted to rob her.

Police said the 73-year-old woman answered the door to her home Sunday on Chestnut Ridge Road in Burrell Township.

“When she opened the door, she was confronted at gunpoint with (an) individual looking for cash. The individual proceeded to take her throughout the house looking for cash," said District Attorney Patrick Dougherty.

When the man forced his way inside, police said he threatened to kill the woman and demanded money.

According to investigators, the woman told him there was no money in the house, and told him she would take him to an ATM to get money. Police said the woman took the man to a Blairsville bank and withdrew $300. She dropped him off at a nearby golf course.

The victim lives on a rural part of Chestnut Ridge Road. Investigators believe this was a targeted, focused attack.

"We believe she was targeted based on relationship with family member that possible defendant may have had but we're still following up those leads," Dougherty said.

State police are canvassing surveillance video and cellphone records.
