Power outage affecting nearly 2,500 customers

McCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Nearly 2,500 people are without power after an outage that started Thursday night.

According to Penn Power's website, the majority of the outages are in McCandless Township; however, some customers in Franklin Park and Ross Township are also without electricity.

Officials said a transformer failed in a substation, causing the outage. The transformer is being replaced.

Power is now expected to be restored by 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to the website.

Service was first expected to be restored by 2 a.m. Friday.

On Route 19, traffic lights were out at busy intersections for much of the morning until public works crews hooked them up to a generator.

The outage has left homes without heat and forced the closure of some businesses.

Valerie Bailey said she had to cancel her clients' appointments at her salon, Valerie's Hair Designs.

“It's cold in here. It's 49 degrees. That's really cold, so we will try to make the best of it. Hopefully our clients will understand and not be upset, and hopefully they get the power on soon,” Bailey said.

Community College of Allegheny County's North Campus also closed for the day.
