A raccoon with rabies was found in O’Hara Township Friday, the Allegheny County Health Department announced Friday.
Authorities found the raccoon close to Ruth S. Weir Park on Saxonburg Boulevard, the ACHD said in a release.
The raccoon then tested positive for rabies.
Officials are advising residents to avoid wild and stray animals, especially animals in O’Hara Township, according to the release.
“If residents see any animal that appears to be acting strange or becomes threatening, they should notify their local animal control service, the police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission immediately,” said Health Department Director, Dr. Karen Hacker.

All Allegheny County residents should have their pets vaccinated, and watch for any “unusual behavior,” the release said.
Any individual bitten, scratched or exposed to saliva from a stray or wild animal should seek immediate medical treatment and call the health department to report the incident at 412-687-2243.
