Rash of car break-ins frustrates Monroeville residents

MONROEVILLE — Neighbor after neighbor after neighbor. So many people on the same Monroeville street have had their cars burglarized.

In some cases, the doors were left open, with their belongings missing.

"(The door) wasn't like fully shut, you know what I mean?” said resident Keith Jones. “See how it was just like that?"

That's the first thing that caught Jones’ attention when he woke up Tuesday morning.

“When I tugged on the handle and looked inside, there's papers all over the place,” he said. “And I noticed first thing, like an idiot, I left my wallet in there, which I never do and I didn't lock it."

Jones is one of several homeowners along Bellwood Avenue who was targeted by thieves in the past week.

"They were in and out, quick, sneaky,” he said. “They didn't even set the dogs off."

It has neighbors taking precaution and asking police for more patrols.

"Nothing has ever happened here like this," said resident Patti Ball.

Ball lives further down the same street and was not targeted. But she says word is spreading quickly for neighbors to be on alert.

“Our neighbors warned us when we came home from work last night to make sure our cars were locked and keep our lights on,” she said.

Some victims went straight to social media with their frustrations, while others went to the Monroeville Police Department.

Channel 11 got a copy of one email sent to the chief, reading, in part, "I do believe our area, as well as surrounding areas, could be patrolled heavier after this incident."

"It's a great neighborhood and I'm sad that this happened here,” she said.

Channel 11 reached out to Monroeville police about recent reported break-ins but didn’t immediately hear back.
