Ringgold teachers go on strike

NEW EAGLE, Pa. — Teachers in the Ringgold School District are on strike and have been walking the picket line since Wednesday morning.

They went on strike this morning after an emergency negotiation session failed Tuesday afternoon.

The teachers plan to be out on strike until they reach a deal with the school district.

The two sides haven't been able to agree on issues such as teaching hours and healthcare.  The biggest sticking point has been teachers' salaries.

The two sides are expected to meet again on Monday, but the president of the education association says she hopes that happens sooner.

“We did let them know that we're available to bargain any time day or night.  At this point, we're scheduled to bargain on Monday the 23rd, but we're hopeful they would contact us prior to that or at least send us something," Maria Degnan, president of Ringgold Education Association said.

The Ringgold School District superintendent said in a statement, "Teacher work stoppages are difficult for all parties – parents are concerned for their child’s education, teachers want to fulfill their obligation to provide instruction and the administration and school board are charged with the task of supporting both of these groups within an affordable budget."
