Salesman whose car caught fire on Fort Pitt Bridge apologizes to Penguins fans

PITTSBURGH — A New Jersey salesman is apologizing to Penguins fans for a car fire that delayed them on their way to the game.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the upper deck of the Fort Pitt Bridge, which carries the inbound lanes.

Tim MacKenzie, the owner of the vehicle that caught fire, called the Channel 11 newsroom Tuesday night.

"Going through the tunnel onto the bridge, the person behind me started honking and I noticed some white smoke coming off the quarter panel on my Subaru, so at that point I knew I had to get out of the tunnel," MacKenzie said.

He was driving from the South Hills to Monroeville.

"So I started honking and the guy behind me started honking, people behind me started honking," he said. "I got out on the bridge and all the systems shut off in my car."
 
MacKenzie was able to make it out safely and even get some of his stuff before making his way back home to New Jersey, but didn't want to leave without a message to Pittsburghers:
 
"I want to apologize to the Pens fans, hopefully you got to the game!" he said.
 
He also said he's not sure why the car caught fire.
