School locked down after juvenile outside appeared to be holding a gun

CARNEGIE, Pa. — Reports of a gunman nearby led to a lockdown of Carnegie Elementary School on Monday afternoon.

Parent Angela Goodman was going to the store and drove by her kids’ school just as police officers and a bloodhound were scouring the campus.

“I just turned over to look and saw a bunch of police cars,” she said. “(I thought) that there was an emergency situation and I needed to get down here and see if my babies were OK.”

Police told Channel 11 there were initial reports of a man with a gun running around the school at about 1 p.m.

The superintendent told Channel 11 that a teacher and principal went outside and saw that it was a juvenile with a light green BB gun.

“I saw some guy back there and it looked like something long in his hand and he was just running around the back back here,” said neighbor Barbara Allen.

Police arrested the juvenile and found the BB gun and BB gun pellets that he threw when police chased him.

The school was on lockdown for a short period of time and the juvenile never entered the school.  Parents said the whole situation is really unsettling.

“To me, it’s just a BB gun, but it can still do damage and I’m thinking, why was he down here by himself outside the school?” said Goodman. “Was he waiting for someone specific to come out? Was there somebody coming to meet him? What was he trying to do?”

Training will be done with faculty on Friday morning during an in-service day. The district tells Channel 11 they want police to press full charges against the juvenile.
