Neighbors concerned by latest violent incident on South Side block

PITTSBURGH — The 1700 block of East Carson Street has seen violence in the past. Just last month a large fight shut down the street.

But a shooting early Friday morning has South Side neighbors on edge.

An employee at a nearby restaurant told Channel 11 she's scared to leave when her shift ends at midnight. And a nearby business owner says the pattern is obvious.

TRENDING NOW:

"People loitering outside or stabbing or shots fired,” said Michael Simcoe, who owns the Metro PCS store there. “It's almost always down on this block, the 1700 block."

The early-morning scene is all too familiar for people along this busy stretch of East Carson.

More than a dozen shell casings littered the ground shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. Police say a man was sitting in his car when he was struck by one of those bullets.

The victim tried to drive himself to a hospital but flagged down an ambulance on Boulevard of the Allies.

"It would be good if there was something they could to crack down on it,” Simcoe said. “I know they have the cameras the DA just put in that goes right to their office. They've caught a few people with that so hopefully that helps."

Cameras are mounted outside several businesses on this block. We requested video from the city's camera, but were told it's not being released.

Simcoe says, unfortunately, he’s not surprised.

The victim is recovering at UPMC Mercy hospital in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
