Silt on road causes crash; teen, father ejected

NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. — Neighbors tell Channel 11 a clogged drain on Route 148 in North Versailles is causing water to back up onto the road. They claim they've called asking for it to be fixed and it hasn't been.

On Wednesday night, some cars slowed down while others didn't.

Now police are watching it carefully.

A police officer told Channel 11 silt and water on the road created a slick surface, causing a crash.

Two people were thrown from their truck.

The 17-year-old and his father went to the hospital, but are expected to be OK.

Witnesses said the truck hydroplaned through the wet spot and into the guardrail.

"We both knew it was a matter of time before an accident," said Aaron McGuire, who sees the problem firsthand every day when he and his neighbors pull out of their driveway.

"A lot of water coming off the hills side, there's a drain under there but clearly not being taken care of," McGuire said. "We've tried multiple times to call."

He says he's called PennDOT about the clogged drain, police say they have, too.

But the drain is still backed up and we're told is why the stretch is dangerous at any speed.

Neighbors hope this crash will get the problem fixed.

"It's definitely an issue here that needs resolved," McGuire said.

Channel 11 called PennDOT to see why they haven't been out to look at the drain and we have not heard back.
