St. Vincent College announces $100 million campaign

LATROBE, Pa. — Saint Vincent College is moving forward with a $100 million promise.

The school wants to make dramatic improvements.

At Heinz Field on Friday, the school and some of its biggest supporters announced how they're going to do that.

"Certainly is a beautiful day in the neighborhood here now that the fog has lifted," Steelers owner Art Rooney II said.

The Latrobe campus, where the Steelers hold their annual training camp, wants to hit the $100 million mark with its newest fundraising campaign.

And it has a fitting name.

"Forward, Always Forward, which is something we try to teach our running backs to pay attention to," Rooney said.

It's also fitting because of the school's goals for that money.

Four construction projects are part of the plan, including a new student life and community center and an expansion of the library, which J. Christopher Donahue, who is chairman of the college's board and the parent of a student at St. Vincent, is really excited about.

"My son graduated in '08," Donahue said. "He told me the library was a place to get lost. Now it's a place to find. You're going to make it a technology revolution on campus."

Programs such as the Fred Rogers Center for Early Childhood Learning and the Student's First Fund, which helps students with financial aid, will receive $20 million.

"We serve students with need," said Brother Norman W. Hipps, of the Order of Saint Benedict, who is president of Saint Vincent College. "In fact, 40% of our freshmen are first-generation students."

It's all part of the school's push to combine hands-on learning and high technology with its Benedictine tradition.

"We will keep Saint Vincent College on a trajectory of excellence," Hipps said.

The school has already raised $67 million of its $100 million goal.

This is the most expensive fundraising campaign in school history.

Saint Vincent College hopes to hit the $100 million mark by May 2020.
