State police to randomly visit Westmoreland County schools

Pennsylvania State Police in Westmoreland County will start making random appearances at schools in the county to be more visible.

The efforts are set to begin Monday with the goal of maintaining a safe environment, Trooper Stephen Limani told Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE.

The visits will allow troopers to meet with school leaders, learn the layout of buildings, increase officer visibility and interact with students.

Limani told TribLIVE the visits are not a direct response to the Feb. 14 school shooting in Florida that killed 17 people. He also said it is not a direct response to a recent spike in threats at area schools.

Troop A in Greensburg and the Kiski Valley station will take part in the school visitation system.
