WILKINSBURG, Pa. — A man who is suspected of shooting a woman in Wilkinsburg in front of a group of children turned himself in Friday.

Darren Taylor, 26, faces charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault in a shooting Tuesday that left a woman critically injured, police said.

Police said the incident started as a fight between children in the 1400 block of Elm Street. Then adults came outside and got involved.

The shooting victim, 41-year-old Lashelle Gibson, was arguing with her female neighbor when the neighbor's boyfriend, who is believed to be Taylor, came outside and allegedly shot Gibson in the stomach with a .45-caliber pistol.

"I didn't know she was shot until I saw the blood coming down her legs," Tiffany Brown, who is Gibson's sister, said earlier this week. Brown said she still doesn't understand why her sister was shot in the middle of the street.

Gibson spoke with Channel 11 last year about her son's cold case murder. Now, Gibson is the hospital, a new victim of gun violence.

"She got out of her surgeries and she just had to go through the healing process," Brown said.

Police aren't sure what prompted the shooting. Officials said the shooting happened in front of a group of 8-year-olds.

"There were kids playing. The oldest one had to be nine," Brown said. "The rest were younger."

After she was wounded, Gibson cried out, "Why did he shoot me? I don't know why he shot me."

Gibson was transported to a trauma hospital. She underwent surgery Wednesday and remained in critical condition, police said.

Taylor remains in the Allegheny County Jail pending arraignment.
