3 Pittsburgh-area YMCA locations closing in August

PITTSBURGH — YMCA officials announced Tuesday they will be closing three Pittsburgh-area YMCA locations in August.

Channel 11 first told you about the bankruptcy protection filing in May, and the organization closed its location in downtown Pittsburgh.

The three additional locations, Penn Hills, Wilmerding and Coraopolis will close on Aug. 31.

Coraopolis sustained significant flood damage this month, and spending money on repairs would cost more than $600,000, officials said.

Here is what we learned from the chief operating officer, Kevin Bolding, during a news conference held Tuesday morning:

  • Western Area Branch sustained thousands of dollars in damage after last week’s flooding which played a role in deciding to close it. 
  • “Changes we are going through are definitely painful." 
  • Kevin Bolding says exact numbers of employees losing their jobs are undetermined at this time.
  • Bolding says they do not expect to close any other YMCAs other than Penn Hills, Wilmerding, Western Area and they are becoming “much healthier” financially through this process.
  • Bolding says they are going to be talking to community members, health department, Mon Valley on how to get people served.

Plus, a total of 234 full-time and part-time employees who rely on the YMCA for work.

YMCA CEO Kevin Bolding told Channel 11, it is “undetermined how many employees will lose their jobs.”

Bolding apologized to the communities these three YMCAs serve.

People who live in these communities said they never saw the closures coming.
