Two new cases of West Nile Virus reported in Allegheny County

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Health Department says there are two new probable human cases of the West Nile Virus in Allegheny County.

The residents, both are over the age of 55 and reside in the Point Breeze and Morningside sections of Pittsburgh.  Both are recovering.

Health Department officials said there are a total of five probable human cases of the disease in the county.

West Nile is a virus spread to people by mosquito bites and is not transmitted person-to-person, officials said.

Health Department officials urged members of the public to protect themselves from mosquitoes by using insect repellent and getting rid of standing water in their yard.

You can report properties with stagnant water in tires, unmaintained swimming pools, and containers to the Health Department.

The West Nile Virus has been found in Allegheny County since 2002, but there have been more cases this year than any of the previous years, according to the Health Department.
