Vandal destroys mementos, sets veterans' flags on fire at local cemetery

BETHEL PARK, Pa. — Police are investigating reports of vandalism at Bethel Cemetery.

Officials say the vandals went as far as pulling flags from veteran's grave sites and lighting them on fire.

Some mementos and flower pots were smashed as well.

“I'm a veteran myself and it's hard to accept, these are gentlemen ladies and men who have given their lives for this country and allowed these people to enjoy the privileges that they have now,” Bethel Cemetery board member Gary May said.

Cemetery employees said an estimated 50 grave sites were hit overnight Tuesday or Wednesday.

The damage has since been cleaned up, but employees are now tasked with determining which of the sites need new flags.

Prior to the cemetery vandalism, vandals also set fire to a playground at the nearby church.

Police believe the incidents may be connected and are picking up patrols in the area.
