Water main break causes headache for North Side residents

PITTSBURGH — A water main break on Pittsburgh's North Side prevented people from leaving their homes on Kennedy Avenue.

"I was hearing this noise and I couldn't figure out what this noise was," said Gary NIezgoda. "I come out front and the whole street was like a river flowing down!"

The residential street quickly went from river to ice rink as temperatures plummeted, causing major issues for Niezgoda and his neighbors.

"By the time I was leaving for work, to try to get up the hill to go to work I got stuck at the bottom there," he said.

Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority told Channel 11 this was a 6-inch water main break, but neighbors quickly learned it was much more.

"It's the third break today," said neighbor Jordin Dogan. "They said the first one was there. They fixed it and then they found another break seven feet from it. "Couldn't make it to school. Couldn't make it to work. And so we've just been sitting inside all day, no water."

A PWSA representative told Channel 11 water has been turned back on.

Crews are now working to salt the street and clear away excess ice.
