Weapons found in teen's room after making school threat

HENRY CLAY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A 14-year-old boy was arrested Thursday when multiple weapons were found in his bedroom after Pennsylvania State Police received a tip about threats of a shooting at Uniontown High School, authorities said.

State police said a student overheard the freshman making threats while riding the school bus Thursday. That student alerted her parents, who then contacted police.

Police obtained a search warrant for a home in Henry Clay Township and found a cache of weapons in the boy’s bedroom, including guns, throwing knives, bulk ammunition and a crossbow, police said.

It's not yet clear who owned those weapons. The boy's parents were home when he was arrested, but it's also unclear what they knew, if anything.

"A catastrophic event was diverted today simply because a student spoke to his parents regarding what he knew, and the parents had the sense to call the police. Those parents and student should be commended and probably saved lives today," Trooper Robert Broadwater, PSP Uniontown, said.

The news rattled parents in the district.

Roberta Cole teared up when she saw her daughter this morning. She went right over to the high school after her daughter Katie texted her saying there were rumors of an attack.

"All I wanted to do is give her a hug, make sure physically that she was OK," Cole said.

State police were stationed at each school in the Uniontown Area School District. Two troopers actually rode the bus the suspect normally takes. And students went through metal detectors before entering the school.

“I would like to commend the young person that had the wisdom to go to an adult after hearing a threat of that nature," said Dan Bosnic, assistant to the superintendent.

The 14-year-old is charged as a juvenile with terroristic threats and causing or risking a catastrophe. He was taken to a juvenile detention center.
