With financials improving, playoff-bound Riverhounds looks to raise its local profile

PITTSBURGH — Autumn nights spent on the bleachers watching football are a seasonal tradition in southwestern Pennsylvania, but the thousands of fans who descend on Station Square on a chilly October Saturday aren’t there to watch the kind of football the region is known for.

Instead, the adults and children streaming into Highmark Stadium — more than 4,500 in total — are there to watch Pittsburgh's soccer team. The Steel Army, an independent fan club sitting behind the goal, chants and sings throughout the game. When a Pittsburgh Riverhounds player is fouled near the goal of opponents Atlanta United 2, fans jump to their feet and shout at the referee. Moments later, midfielder Neco Brett blasts a penalty kick past the Atlanta goalkeeper and the stadium erupts. The Steel Army sets off black and gold smoke and waves flags.
