Woman falls victim to iTunes gift card scheme

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Hopewell Township mom is issuing a warning about a scheme involving iTunes gift cards.

Jodi Toogood said she wanted to give her family a nice Christmas.

Toogood searched for payday loans online, looking for a brick-and-mortar store. Instead, she got a call from a site called Monny Loans.

She said that representatives for the company told her to go buy $150 in iTunes gift cards to secure the loan plus $450 for taxes and they would give her a number where she could get a loan and it would be wired to her.

She was going to use the money to pay off her layaway for her kids' Christmas presents.

Toogood said the company representative demanded even more from her and before she knew it, she bought $1,500 of gift cards and gave them the PINs over the phone.

In return she got nothing and now can't pay for the layaway items, she told Channel 11.

“I was hoping to use it to make a nicer Christmas for my kids because this is the first time I've worked a full-time job. I was hoping to make it a nicer Christmas for everybody, including my mom and dad and my aunt,” Toogood said.

Toogood filed a report with the Hopewell Township police. Investigators said Toogood is the only person to file a report against the company in the area, but officers have contacted other agencies to find out if there are any other reports.

Investigators said to remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it likely is and it’s probably a scheme.

Channel 11 tried calling the number that called Toogood from Florida. When we asked if we could speak with someone, they hung up.
