Woman grazed in head by bullet while clipping coupons inside home

PITTSBURGH — A bullet grazed a woman in the back of her head early Monday morning as she was sitting in her home in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood, police said.

The bullet appeared to have come through a window of the home on North Fairmount Street, according to investigators.

Police were alerted to the incident shortly before 12:30 a.m. by ShotSpotter technology that detected two gunshots, authorities said. Someone also called 911.

When police and paramedics arrived at the home, the woman, who is in her mid-50s, was alert and conscious, police said. She was taken to a hospital.

The woman’s son said his mother was on a couch clipping coupons when she was grazed by the bullet. He said the shooter walked onto the home’s front porch and fired the gun.

Investigators said at least three other people were in the home at the time of the incident and were unharmed.

The Group Violence Intervention Unit is investigating.
