1 man from Washington state dies after plane skids off runway at Alaska airport

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A man from Washington state died after a commercial plane skidded off a runway at an Alaska airport Thursday, Alaska State Troopers confirmed Friday.

Update 1:35 p.m. EDT Oct 18: According to Alaska State Troopers, David Allan Oltman, 38. died after PenAir Flight 3296 skidded off the runway at Unalaska-Dutch Harbor Airport, KTUU reported.

Original report: According to Alaska Airlines, PenAir Flight 3296, flying into Dutch Harbor from Anchorage, landed at Unalaska-Dutch Harbor Airport but went off the runway, KTUU reported.

The plane was carrying 39 passengers, including members of a high school swimming team, and three crew members, CNN reported.

In a news release, Alaska Airlines said the Saab 2000 aircraft went off the runway at 5:40 p.m.

Alex Russin, superintendent of schools in Cordova, wrote in a social media post that the district's high school swim team and chaperones were on board the aircraft, KTUU reported.

Russin told CNN, "All students and chaperones are accounted for and OK."
