Bible used to smuggle meth into MS jail, police say

A Bible was used for more than just prayers at a Mississippi jail last week.

Courtney Ford, 30, brought a Bible to an inmate, but her intention wasn’t spiritual, authorities say. Instead, the good book contained a stash of methamphetamine, according to the Daily Journal.

“We search every item that is brought into the jail, and the property officer noticed something wrong. There was a bulge in the back cover of the Bible,” Jim Johnson, Lee County Sheriff, told the Journal. “We cut it open and found a powdery substance.”

The substance turned out to be methamphetamine, police said.

The inmate, Jason Estes, was convicted last week on charges of trafficking meth and was awaiting transfer to a state prison to serve a 40-year sentence. His sentence could be reconsidered, and his bond was set at 30,000 on the new charges, the Journal reported.

In addition, Ford was charged with possession of a controlled substance and attempt to introduce contraband into a correctional facility.
