Boy, 5, killed in accident involving float during South Carolina Christmas parade

BLUFFTON, S.C. — A 5-year-old boy was killed in an accident involving a float at the end of a Christmas parade in South Carolina, authorities said.

Ameer Frazier died Saturday as he was being dropped off in the parking lot of an elementary school in Bluffton, WCSC reported. According to Bluffton police Capt. Joe Babiewicz, the incident occurred as the Bluffton Christmas parade ended, the television station reported.

Frazier was taken to an area hospital, where he died, according to the Island Packet of Hilton Head Island. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday in Charleston, the newspaper reported.

Police are trying to determine the cause of the accident and have been speaking with witnesses, WCSC reported. No charges are expected to be filed, police said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Ameer and to those who witnessed the accident. This is an accident that can only be described as tragic and unimaginable,” Bluffton Police Chief Chris Chapmond said.

Bluffton County School District Superintendent Frank Rodriguez issued a statement of condolence Sunday afternoon.

“When we lose one of our students, it’s a deeply felt and personal loss. Every teacher, every administrator, every school staff member: Each one of us is affected, and today we’re praying for Ameer and his family,” Rodriguez said.
