Claire's recalls makeup possibly contaminated with asbestos

People walk by a Claire's store at the Northgate Mall on March 19, 2018 in San Rafael, California. Teen jewelry chain store Claire's announced that they have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in an effort to eliminate $1.9 billion in debt.

Claire's is recalling three types of cosmetics after Food and Drug Administration testing found the presence of asbestos, a known cancer-causing carcinogen.

"The FDA sampled and had tested targeted cosmetic products following reports of contaminated cosmetics marketed by Claire's," according to an FDA press release.

The testing found traces of asbestos in eye shadows, compact powder and contour palette.

The products impacted include:

  • Claire's Eye Shadows – Batch No/Lot No: 08/17
  • Claire's Compact Powder – Batch No/Lot No: 07/15
  • Claire's Contour Palette – Batch No/Lot No: 04/17

Consumers with any of these products should stop using them.

Officials with the Florida-based accessory chain told the FDA they don't believe any of the makeup products are still on store shelves.

The agency said so far there’s been no reports of skin damage or injury, but is asking consumers to report any adverse effects from using this makeup.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral often found near talc, an ingredient in many cosmetic products, the FDA said, but it's also a known carcinogen with significant health risks. If talc mining sites are not chosen carefully and steps taken to purify the talc ore, products can become contaminated with asbestos.
