Shane Colombo, 25, a California native, was one of  six people killed in the city over the Labor Day weekend when he stumbled into the middle of a gun battle and was shot in the crossfire, according to WLS-TV. He later died at a local hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Colombo’s fiancé, Vincent Perez, said he told him to stay home and relax.

"We Skyped and I told him, like, 'You need to stay home. You need to rest. You just got in,'" Perez said in an interview with WLS.

Colombo’s mother said he was getting ready to join Northwestern’s psychology doctoral program and that he was both an accomplished student and a cancer survivor.

Tonya Colombo told the TV station that her son was a kind person and a hard worker.

"Shane worked hard to accomplish his goals. He wanted to make a difference with his research and knowledge and I knew he would."

An investigation is underway, but police have not made any arrests, yet, in Colombo's killing.
