Girl told her red hair violated school picture rules

An 8-year-old girl in Jackson, Michigan, was told that her hairstyle violated the rules of picture day and that this time she was going to have to go without the annual photograph.

Marian Scott is a student at Paragon Charter Academy and the school has a policy, which is listed in the school's handbook, which regulates students' hair color, WILX reported.

Marian's parents are not challenging the policy itself, but how it was handled.

They are questioning why are the red extensions her family braided in were not allowed for a photo, but they were OK for her to return to class.

The school told WILX that if a student is in violation of the hair rules, they have a week or so to correct the style or colors and that's why she was allowed to return to class.

The school also said they informed families before the photos were taken about the dress code, a call Marian's father, Doug Scott, said he did not receive. If he had, he said he would have told Marian's mother not to put the red in their daughter's hair, he told WILX.

Since Marian was forced to miss the first photo day, her family plans to have her ready on retake day in November with naturally colored hair.
