High times: Museum of Weed opens doors Aug. 3 in California

A cannabis museum is coming to California, and advocates of the psychoactive drug believe it's high time for one.

Weedmaps, a cannabis technology and media company based in Irvine, is the driving force behind the Museum of Weed, which is scheduled to open Aug. 3 in Hollywood. The company's goal is to destigmatize cannablis through the 30,000-square-foot museum, CNN reported.

"We're at this point now where there is some cannabis normalization, where they're already starting to forget that there have been people who have been in jail (because of prohibition)." Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals told CNN.

According to the museum's website, visitors will be taken "through the storied history of cannabis by moving through the many varied locations and time periods where it has typically -- or stereotypically -- been consumed. Here, we celebrate the victories and shed light on the most damning moments throughout the last century."

The museum will include seven immersive exhibits, a plant lab, interactive art installations and artifacts, according to its website.

Six of the exhibits will be focus on specific eras in marijuana policy and history, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. They'll highlight milestones, pop-culture influences and social injustices from the time before prohibition, to the eras of "Reefer Madness" and "Just Say No," to today's booming legalization movement.

The seventh exhibit will focus on the plant itself, including medical research around its potential uses.

And with all that cannabis lying around -- by the way the museum is not that interactive, so patrons will not able to smoke or consume cannabis or its compound, CBD  -- there also will be a gift shop and a cafe "to grab some munchies."

The museum will be open through Sept. 29, but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission will be limited to people ages 18 and older. Tickets will cost $35 per person.

Weedmaps is partnering with Virtue, the creative agency.

"Weed has always been bigger than stoner culture," Trent Rohner, group creative director at Virtue, told the Daily News in November. "One of the most misunderstood plants in history, the Weedmaps Museum of Weed is our way of sifting through its history and stripping away the misconceptions caused by racism, fear and ignorance."
