Police said the man and woman, both in their 60s, were trapped under the car.when its driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, went across a median and then onto an embankment under the West Sam Houston Tollway, KTRK reported.

The driver left the scene on foot, police said. Police found the couple under the car, still locked in a hug.

"It's a very, very tragic scene," Sean Teare, with the Harris County District Attorney's Office Chief of Vehicular Crimes, told KHOU. "The two died together. It was obvious they were together in life as well. Every one of these scenes is sobering. This one is very, very tragic."

Investigators said they believe they know who was driving the car, the television station reported. According to police, the hit-and-run driver was fleeing from another accident, KTRK reported.

The people involved in the first crash were not hurt, police told KHOU.

"We were just involved in a crash and it could have been us. They were homeless," Rolando Orellana, one of the victims in the first crash, told KTRK. "They were not expecting to get killed by a crazy person like that."
