CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot Thursday while trying to stop the sexual assault of his niece, police said.
Investigators said a man snuck into a window around 9 p.m. and sexually assaulted the man's 17-year-old niece, WLS reported.

James Lewis, 66, heard screaming from his niece’s room and when he came to help, he was shot in the back and the head.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WLS reported. The niece was taken to another hospital and is in stable condition.
The suspect fled but was taken into custody by officers who were responding to the scene, WLS reported.
Charges are expected to be filed.
