Man in jail after biting girlfriend and trying to rip out her tongue

INDIANAPOLIS — A startling image of a woman with a severely bruised face as she lies in a hospital bed is being spread across social media to raise awareness about abuse.

WCPO reported that Carleigh Hager, 25, and her former live-in boyfriend, Ryan Cameron, 26, were arguing at a wedding and their confrontation became violent once they were at their Indianapolis home.

Police said Hager told them she tried to remove herself from Cameron by going into a bedroom in their home, but he followed her and started to strangle her and three friends had to pull Cameron off of her.

Hager said she locked herself in the bathroom, but Cameron knocked open the door.

"He locked our friends outside of our house and ran to the bathroom and locked us in the bathroom," Hager told WXIN.

Cameron then beat her and tried to pull her tongue out of her mouth.

"He got the right side halfway. He got it halfway ripped out," she said.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Hager is now out of the intensive care unit and in stable condition. She underwent surgery to reattach her tongue, but her brother-in-law, Eric Splichal, said she has more medical care going forward.

Cameron is in the Marion County Jail and faces felony charges, including aggravated battery and strangulation, according to WXIN.

GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with medical bills. Over $17,000 has been raised toward its $20,000 goal.
