Unser, 57, of Avon, Indiana, was booked into the Hendricks County Jail at 3:21 a.m., according to court records. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, speeding and improper lane changes, court records show.

Unser won the Indianapolis 500 car race in 1992 and 1994.

Unser has had several offenses while operating a vehicle, including a drunken drive and hit and run charge in 2007, according to WTHR. He pleaded no contest and lost his driver's license for 90 days. Unser also was charged with reckless driving in New Mexico in 2011 when police said he exceeded 100 mph while drag racing in his Chevrolet Suburban, CBS News reported.

Unser was also arrested in 2002 after a fight with his girlfriend in which police said alcohol was involved, WXIN reported.

In 2016, Unser told the Star his then-partner left him after his 2011 arrest.

“I was left all by myself, and I had never been all by myself,” Unser told the newspaper. “From my parents’ home growing up to the apartment with (first wife) Shelley, never alone.

“(Most kids) go to college, learn to live on their own, fall in love, have their heart broken. I never had any of that until I was 50 years old."
