Unstable church causes Duquesne apartment building to evacuate

DUQUESNE, Pa. — An abandoned Duquesne church is set for demolition Tuesday morning after two bell towers became unstable. Stability concerns of the towers have caused residents in an apartment complex nearby to be evacuated for safety.

Storms with strong winds and heavy rain moved through the area Sunday evening causing damage across the region. Duquesne’s Mayor Phil Krivacek believes the storms may have played a role in the further damage of the already deteriorating Holy Trinity Catholic Church on South First Street.

Krivacek told Channel 11 the demolition process would be delicate due to the bell towers having to be taken down from the back side, not towards the street.

Concerns for the deteriorating condition led Duquesne city officials to seek out the property owner previously in an attempt place a demolition plan.

Demolition begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
