Police: Victim bites robber's arm during tussle at ATM

A man who robbed a woman in Oakland may have made off with her cash, but the victim put up a fight and bit her assailant in the arm before he took off, police said.

Police said the robbery happened at a PNC Bank ATM machine at North Craig Street and Fifth Avenue just after noon on Oct. 6. According to police, a woman was withdrawing money when a man came up behind her, reached over her shoulder and grabbed the cash from her hands.

The woman and the robber got into a tussle, and the woman bit the robber on his left arm before she fell down.

A man using a nearby ATM tried to stop the robber, but surveillance video shows that the thief ran down North Craig Street toward Centre Avenue.

Helen Troutman, who works across the street, uses the same ATM frequently and said she wasn’t surprised this happened in broad daylight. She said that when she uses a public ATM, she always keeps a lookout.
