Woman driving her 5-year-old crashes truck into Subway sign; charges pending

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Pending the results of toxicology tests, a woman will face charges after she crashed her truck Saturday into a sign in North Huntingdon, police said. Authorities said the woman’s 5-year-old son was also inside the truck at the time of the crash.

Police said the truck burst into flames after it struck a Subway restaurant sign along Route 30.

“We heard a loud bang and looked out the window, and we saw a bunch of debris flying,” Subway employee Brittney Balog said.

Balog told Channel 11 News that her co-worker, who's a firefighter and an EMT, was one of the first to take action.

"She ran out there to help get them out of the car, and I called 911,” she said.

A good Samaritan also stopped and helped the pair pull the 23-year-old woman and the boy out of their truck.

Police said the woman admitted to huffing an aerosol can of air duster, the kind used to clean computer keyboards, before getting in the truck with her child and driving.

She's also accused of being in a hit-and-run just a mile down Route 30 in Irwin before she crashed into the Subway sign, authorities said.

The mother and son were not hurt, but police said the woman will face a long list of charges once the toxicology results return.
