• Woman killed in shooting outside of Morgantown Walmart

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - A woman was killed in a shooting outside of a Walmart in Morgantown on Saturday, police said.

The shooting happened along Greenbag road around 9:45 a.m.

Police said when officers arrived, they found a large group of people surrounding the victim of an apparent shooting.

Police identified the victim as Shannon Stafford, also know as Shannon Mitchell, 29, of Bruceton Mills W.Va.

The suspect was identified as Larry Mitchell, 54, of Shinston, W.Va., police said.

Based upon the preliminary investigation, police said it appears that Mitchell confronted Stafford as she was pulling into the parking lot and shot her several times while she sat in her vehicle. Stafford exited her vehicle as Mitchell continued to fire until Stafford collapsed, police said.

Police said Mitchell appears to be the father of Stafford’s estranged husband, and the shooting was motivated by a continuing family dispute.

Mitchell has been charged with murder and is being confined at the Doddridge Regional Jail.
