NFL Game Summary - Cincinnati At Miami

POSTED: 6:00 pm EST December 30, 2007

(Sports Network) - Carson Palmer threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 38-25 victory over the Miami Dolphins in the season-finale for both teams at Dolphin Stadium.

Palmer completed 23-of-32 passes with one interception. Chad Johnson finished with four catches for 131 yards with a pair of scores and T.J. Houshmandzadeh hauled in nine passes for 90 yards. Houshmandzadeh tied New England's Wes Welker for the league lead with 112 receptions this season.

Kenny Watson also scored on a two-yard run for the Bengals (7-9), who wrapped up a disappointing season with their first two-game win streak of the campaign. It was the first losing season in five years under head coach Marvin Lewis.

"Five years and things are a little stale," Lewis said Sunday. "We're going to take all those doggone binders from five years of games and get rid of them, and clean up as new people come in."

The Dolphins (1-15), meanwhile, finished with two straight losses after their lone win of the season against Baltimore. Miami became the eighth team to complete a 1-15 season since the schedule expanded in 1978, and the first to do so since Carolina in 2001.

Miami quarterback Cleo Lemon threw for 123 yards with a touchdown before leaving the contest in the third quarter with a hip injury. John Beck, in his first action since being benched on December 9 following a disastrous four- game stint as starting quarterback, threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in defeat.

The Dolphins also played in front of their new executive vice president of football operations, Bill Parcells, who took in the game in person with good friend and former NFL executive Ron Wolf.

Parcells will likely start cleaning house Monday following the worst season in Dolphins history. Reports in south Florida on Sunday said general manager Randy Mueller was already on his way out, and head coach Cam Cameron may also be on the chopping block after just one season.

"My mind is coming off of a tough game, a game we wanted to win, and we'll address those things starting tomorrow," Cameron said about his potential future with the Dolphins, adding that he will meet with Parcells this week. "We're going to sit down this week and we'll go from there."

The Dolphins tried to impress the new man in charge, opening the scoring on the game's first possession when Jay Feely drilled a 49-yard field goal.

Cincinnati answered with a 13-play, 66-yard march for a touchdown, aided by a couple of big third-down conversions and two costly Miami penalties. Palmer hit Chris Henry for 16 yards on 3rd-and-12 and found Houshmandzadeh for 17 on 3rd-and-15, while a facemask penalty and a pass interference call gave the Bengals first downs on third-down incomplete passes. Palmer finally put his team in the end zone with a two-yard strike to Johnson on another third down to make it 7-3.

The Dolphins went back in front with 7:03 left in the second quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from Lemon to Ted Ginn Jr. After Miami drove 72 yards in 11 plays, it took Cincinnati just one big play to regain the lead.

Palmer's second pass of the ensuing drive went to Johnson for a 70-yard score. Johnson appeared to step out of bounds at the three, but none of the officials saw it and the play went unchallenged by Cameron.

After a series of punts, the Bengals took over at their own 37 with just 62 seconds to play before the break and Palmer needed only five plays to reach the end zone again. He completed his first three passes before a spike to stop the clock, then found Antonio Chatman with a four-yard scoring toss just four seconds before the intermission for a 21-10 cushion.

Palmer threw for 211 yards in the opening half and the Cincinnati ground game mustered a mere nine yards.

The first pass Palmer threw in the second half was tipped and picked off by Derrick Pope, but the Dolphins were unable to capitalize despite a first down at the Cincinnati 37.

Lemon was hurt on the second play after the turnover and Beck's first play turned into disaster. He failed to handle a clean shotgun snap and Nedu Ndukwe raced 54 yards the other way for a score after scooping up the fumble, giving the Bengals a 28-10 advantage.

Beck, after a pair of three-and-outs, directed his first touchdown drive of the season -- a 13-play march that he finished with a two-yard run on a sneak to pull Miami within 11 with 12:21 to play.

The Bengals, though, again answered quickly. After Palmer hit Johnson with a 43-yard pass on the first play after the kickoff, Watson did the rest with three carries for 22 yards. He scored on a two-yard run for a 35-17 edge.

After Houshmandzadeh failed to come up with a catch on third down that would have given him sole possession of the NFL lead in receptions, Shayne Graham kicked a 30-yard field goal with 2:16 left.

Beck then connected with Derek Hagan for a 22-yard score and a two-point conversion in the final minute to account for the final margin. It was the rookie's first career TD pass.

The BYU product completed 13-of-21 passes for 135 yards. In his previous four games, the Dolphin offense failed to score a touchdown with him at the helm.
