Falcons Sign No. 3 Overall Pick, QB Ryan

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Quarterback Matt Ryan, the No. 3 overall pick from this year's draft, signed a six-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.

Financial details of the contract were not disclosed, but the Atlanta Journal- Constitution reports it's worth $72 million with $34.75 million in guaranteed money.

Ryan is the second top-three 2008 NFL draft choice to sign following Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long's deal prior to being selected first overall.

"I'm so excited to have all of this done, to truly be a member of the Falcons organization," Ryan said. "I think it was important for everyone, in terms of the organization and myself to get this done as fast as we possibly could so that day one in training camp, I'm going to be there."

The Boston College product threw for 9,313 yards and 56 touchdowns in his Golden Eagle career earning ACC Player of the Year honors as a senior and Heisman Trophy consideration. His career completions and attempts set school records while finishing third in the school's all-time record book in passing yards and completion percentage. Ryan finished his collegiate career with a 3-0 record in bowl games.

The Golden Eagles finished eighth in the nation in total offense last year as Ryan finished with 4,507 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, both single-season school records.

The number two selection overall, Virginia product Chris Long, has yet to sign with the St. Louis Rams.
