Thompson Talks About Favre Situation, Says Rodgers Is Starter

POSTED: 4:20 pm EDT July 12, 2008

(Sports Network) - Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson spoke to several local media outlets on Saturday about the controversy surrounding Brett Favre's desire to return from his brief retirement, and admitted that his club is in a "very difficult spot."

The interview, reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, portrayed a confused Thompson not quite sure what to make of Favre's latest change of heart regarding his playing status.

"We have to go with what's real," Thompson told the Journal Sentinel. "We don't know what the options are right now. We'll talk about it internally. It's all guess work.

"This is a very difficult spot we're in. It's a very volatile situation and we don't have all the answers yet."

Thompson admitted that it's possible that Favre could return to the Packers roster this year, but affirmed that Aaron Rodgers is the club's starting quarterback for 2008.

Favre held a candid, tear-filled press conference to announce his retirement in March. He was set to leave the game as the NFL's all-time record holder in several categories, including wins by a starting quarterback, passing yards, touchdowns and consecutive games started.

Last season, Favre led the Packers to the NFC Championship game after throwing for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns and compiling a 95.7 passer rating.

During the press conference, Favre said several times that he could still play, however, and as the 2008 season approaches Favre, who has flirted with retirement over the last several years, seems to have changed his mind.

During Saturday's interview, Thompson told the Journal Sentinel that Favre had initially floated the idea of unretiring in late March, only weeks after his retirement. Thompson told the paper that he and Packers coach Mike McCarthy told Favre at that time that it was not too late, and that he would be welcome back for another season in Green Bay.

Favre changed his mind again, however, and decided to stay retired, albeit momentarily.
