Chiefs Deal DE Allen To Vikings

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Chiefs traded Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday in exchange for three picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The deal came together Tuesday evening, when Allen negotiated one of the largest contracts ever for a defensive player with Minnesota -- six years for about $74 million, with $31 million guaranteed, according to the Kansas City Star.

The Vikings sent their first-round pick, 17th overall, and both their third-round picks, 73rd and 82nd overall, to the Chiefs. Minnesota and Kansas City exchanged sixth-round picks, the Vikings will now pick 187th, while the Chiefs moved up to No. 182.

Allen, a 6-foot-6, 270-pounder, was the NFL's leader in sacks last season with a career-high 15 1/2, in addition to 67 tackles and three forced fumbles. He was taken in the fourth round by the Chiefs in the 2004 draft, after a stellar career at Division I-AA (now FCS) school Idaho State, where he won the Buck Buchanan award in 2003, given yearly to the best defensive player in FCS. Allen paid immediate dividends, tallying nine sacks as a rookie. He had 11 sacks in 2005, and 7 1/2 in 2006.

The 26-year-old does come to Minnesota with some baggage. Allen has been arrested twice for DUI, and was suspended for the first two games of the 2007 season for violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy. Any subsequent violation would draw a lengthy suspension from the league.
