Niners Release Veteran QB Dilfer

POSTED: 5:29 pm EDT March 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers terminated the contract of quarterback Trent Dilfer Thursday.

Dilfer originally joined the 49ers in 2006 after being traded from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for QB Ken Dorsey and a 2007 seventh-round draft pick. He did not see any action in his first season with the 49ers, but Dilfer played in seven games with six starts in 2007, completing 113-of-219 passes for 1,166 yards with seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

"Trent Dilfer is a true professional in every meaning of the word," Niners coach Mike Nolan said. "He is one of the most respected players in the league for good reason. Trent has provided great value to our team over the past two years in terms of his leadership, knowledge of the game and play on the field."

Originally a first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1994 NFL Draft, Dilfer has played in 131 career games with 113 starts in stints with Tampa Bay (1994-99), Baltimore (2000), Seattle (2001-04), Cleveland (2005) and San Francisco (2006-07). He has completed 1,759-of-3,172 passes for 20,518 yards with 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions.

Dilfer earned Pro Bowl recognition in 1997 with the Buccaneers and helped lead the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl championship in 2000.
